Vol. 48 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Scheme for Married Gárdai.

asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the difficulties experienced by married members of the Gárda Síochána in securing houses for their families and themselves in different towns of the Saorstát, he will take advantage of the Housing (Financial and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1932, to have a certain number of houses built specially for married Gárda in each of the towns where such difficulties exist.

Barrack accommodation for the Gárda Síochána is provided by the Board of Works out of the Vote for Public Works and Buildings. That Vote contains no provision for building houses for married members of the Gárda, and I do not propose to ask the Minister for Finance to make such provision in future. The housing policy of the Government, which is directed towards relieving the general shortage, does not include the provision of State owned houses for Government employees.
