Vol. 49 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Recruiting for Gárda Síochána.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of men recruited for the Gárda Síochána since recruiting was reopened in August last, and what percentage of this total has been detailed for the protection of public buildings.

Since the 1st August 150 recruits have been admitted to the Gárda Síochána, 82 of these have been detailed for the protection of public buildings.

I did not catch the figure of the total number recruited.

There were 150, 82 of whom have been detailed for the protection of public buildings.

Is it proposed to dismiss any of them in view of the statement of a colleague of the Minister to the effect that the emergency for which these men were recruited has passed? Is it proposed to dismiss any of them on that Minister's statement? As a matter of fact, I do not think you could either dismiss or take men on, on that Minister's statement.

Will the Minister state if there is any difference in the rate of pay between any of those men and the ordinary members of the Gárda Síochána?

The ordinary regulations in regard to pay are being followed.

Is the Minister aware that numbers of the persons recruited are persons who were told off to shoot previous Ministers?
