Vol. 49 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Charge Against Deputy.

asked the President whether he intends in the public interest to set up a tribunal to inquire into and report upon the general circumstances in which the charge published by him in the Dáil on the 28th September was made; the nature of the report upon which that charge was based; the person or persons making that report; the grounds upon which the allegations contained in the report were made; the reasons which actuated the person or persons in making the report; and the steps which should be taken to prevent any similar occurrence in the future.

The answer is in the negative.

Will the President say for what reason he declines to set up an inquiry?

I do not propose to add anything to my answer.

Will the President make public the exact terms of the report that he received and the exact terms of the subsequent withdrawal?

I should like to ask if it is as part of the administrative policy inspired by Catholic principles and Catholic doctrines such as the Vice-President spoke about recently that the President is concealing and shielding the malicious and criminal slanderer in this case, or whether it is that he simply wants to retain this dirty tool for more dirty work?
