Vol. 51 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle Confiscated.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that exporters of cattle to British markets whose cattle have been confiscated for alleged wrongful classification, have in addition been compelled to pay the special duties on the same cattle, and if he will state what representations, if any, he has made to the British Government to have this hardship remedied.

The reply to the first portion of the question is in the affirmative. Informal discussions on the subject have taken place between representatives of my Department and of the British Ministry of Agriculture. It is understood that the matter is under consideration by the British Government. I do not propose to consider what action may best be taken until the decision of that Government is announced.

The matter is then under consideration?

Dr. Ryan

Yes.

With the British Government?

Dr. Ryan

It is under consideration by the British Government at present.

On representations made by you?

Dr. Ryan

Yes.

Is the Minister aware that there are many farmers in his own constituency who go in for winter cattle feeding and bring their cattle out as stores in the spring? What position does the Minister think these people will be in now?

That is a different question.
