Vol. 51 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Compensation for Slaughtered Cattle.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state on what basis it is contemplated compensation will be paid for any cattle it may be decided to slaughter in consequence of the economic war.

Dr. Ryan

The slaughter of cattle in consequence of the economic war is not contemplated. Apart from this, however, a scheme is under consideration for killing diseased and old cattle. Legislation will be required to secure the necessary powers to deal with diseased cattle. I hope to be in a position to submit proposals for legislation at an early date, when the basis of compensation will be indicated.

Is the Minister aware that feeding stuffs in Wexford are now exhausted? Will the Minister say what are the people to do with their cattle? Are they to turn them out to perish? Where is the alternative market?

Dr. Ryan

That was answered in Question No. 10.
