Vol. 51 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Assistance in Leix and Offaly.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of applications for payment of unemployment assistance received up to and including March 31st, 1934, by the managers of the labour exchanges in Birr, Edenderry, Tullamore, Portlaoighise, Portarlington and Rathdowney, also the number of persons receiving unemployment insurance benefit at the exchanges referred to on the same date.

The part of the Unemployment Assistance Act, 1933, which relates to the payment of unemployment assistance is not yet in operation, consequently no application therefore has yet been made. An order has, however, been made appointing the 18th April, 1934, as the date on and after which persons who possess qualification certificates may apply for unemployment assistance.

The nearest date to the 31st March on which unemployment benefit was paid was the 29th March. The numbers of persons who received unemployment insurance benefit on that date at the following offices are:—

Birr

41

Edenderry

48

Tullamore

109

Portlaoighise

103

Portarlington

68

Rathdowney
