Vol. 52 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Demonstration Farms.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if his Department has carefully considered, as already promised, the suggestion to take over average farms in different counties and run them under the supervision of Departmental experts independent of agricultural colleges, etc., and keep accounts in order to demonstrate in a practical way how farms can be made pay; and, if so, if he will state what decision has been come to.

I have already given careful consideration to the suggestion that the State should acquire and run farms in various parts of the country for demonstration purposes, but I am convinced that the adoption of this suggestion is undesirable.

The farms which are already conducted by my Department are sufficient for educational and experimental purposes.

Is the Minister aware that there are plenty of farms to be had? I think it is the wish of everybody that the Minister should interest himself actively in this matter so that he may give the farming community some idea of how agriculture can be made pay.

Dr. Ryan

I am not aware that there are plenty of farms to be got.

I will undertake to get the Minister some farms in County Cavan.

Dr. Ryan

As a matter of fact, I am aware there is a great demand for land all over the country.
