Vol. 53 No. 4

Vote 12—State Laboratory.

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim ná raghaidh thar £4,174 chun slánuithe na suime is gá chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfaidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1935, chun Tuarastail agus Costaisí na Saotharlainne Stáit.

That a sum not exceeding £4,174 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1935, for the Salaries and Expenses of the State Laboratory.

There is a decrease on this Vote of £594 as compared with last year, when the Vote amounted to £6,868. The function of the State Laboratory is to examine samples of various kinds sent up by the various Departments. There were 37,545 samples examined last year. These included such articles as candles, soap, bottles, beer, spirits, wines, cider, denatured alcohol, fruit (dried or otherwise preserved), molasses, saccharine, sugar and sugar confectionery, cocoa, table waters, margarine, tobacco, oatmeal, and woollen materials. The general criticism which arises on this Vote is that the functions of a State laboratory ought to be something more than that. As Deputies are aware, provision is now being made for special examination for technical and industrial purposes through another channel.

Question put and agreed to.
