Vol. 53 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Fisheries Legislation.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when proposals for legislation dealing with fisheries and fishing rights on the Shannon will be introduced; if he is aware that the livelihood of the Abbey fishermen, Limerick, has been seriously jeopardised by the development of the Shannon Electricity Scheme; and if he will state whether any arbitrator has been appointed to inquire into claims for compensation arising out of such interference with fishing, and, if so, whether any claims have been heard and determined and what steps should be taken to have other claims heard and determined.

Legislation dealing with fisheries and fishing rights in the Shannon, which have been affected by the operation of the hydro-electric scheme, will be introduced in the present session. I am fully aware of the facts concerning the Abbey fishermen. An arbitrator has, I understand, been appointed to enquire into certain specific claims for compensation for interference with fisheries, due to the construction of the works. These claims have been heard and determined. Any claimant who desires to appeal to the arbitrator in advance of the contemplated legislation may do so in accordance with the provisions of the Shannon Electricity Act, 1925.
