Vol. 53 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Scheme Effects.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that owing to the operation of the Shannon Scheme, the Lock and Corbally Mills, Limerick City, were obliged to close down, with the consequent disemployment of the workers; that a large number of these workers are still unemployed; and if it is intended to take any steps to provide alternative employment for these persons, or otherwise to make provision for the payment of compensation to them.

I am aware that the mills in question have been closed down and some of the workers may be still unemployed. If these men have registered at the nearest employment exchange or branch employment office steps will have been taken to offer them any alternative employment that may have become available. The Shannon Electricity Act, 1925, does not provide for the payment of compensation in such cases.
