Vol. 54 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reservation of College Vacancies.

asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the great progress made in the teaching of Irish in the non-Fíor-Ghaeltacht districts, he will consider the advisability of reserving a certain amount of vacancies in the preparatory colleges for pupils from schools in such non-Fíor-Ghaeltacht districts.

Eighty per cent. of the total number of vacant places in the preparatory colleges are reserved for candidates who obtain 85 per cent. or over in Oral Irish, and are allocated on the following basis:—40 per cent. to candidates from the Fíor-Ghaeltacht; 20 per cent. to candidates from the Gaeltacht and Breac-Ghaeltacht as defined by Coimisiún na Gaeltachta Report (1925); 20 per cent. to candidates irrespective of the district they come from.

The remaining 20 per cent. of the places are available for the candidates highest on the order of merit list who secured less than 85 per cent. in Oral Irish.

Sixty per cent. of the vacancies are accordingly available for competition for candidates from the non-Fíor-Ghaeltacht districts.
