Vol. 54 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Live Stock Industry.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of his advice given to farmers in a speech (as reported in the Press) at Bailieborough on the 19th August last to make a change in the live stock industry, and to go more and more into the breeding of horses for sporting and racing which would win stakes, and of hunters that would be priceless, and that the rich people who were willing to indulge in such sport would be willing to pay for, he is prepared to facilitate farmers in making such a change in their industry by the granting of loans at a cheap rate of interest which would not be repayable until the horses would have won stakes and commanded high prices.

Parliamentary Questions as to the live stock industry are for the Minister for Agriculture, but as regards the Deputy's suggestion, the ante-post-price offered by him is not such as would command itself to a Minister for Finance.

When the Minister advises farmers to carry on a certain kind of business, can he not make any provision to enable them to do so? Is the Minister aware that such stock is liable to be seized by the Sheriff and that a valuable lot might be sold at the price of donkeys?

That is not the question the Deputy asked.
