Vol. 56 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bacon Curers and Excise Duty.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state to what fund moneys collected as Excise duty from bacon curers on pigs cured by them is being paid; and whether such moneys are earmarked for any specific purpose.

The proceeds of the Excise duty on pig carcases are, in pursuance of Article 61 of the Constitution, paid into the Exchequer. An amount equivalent to that yielded by the duty is made available towards meeting export bounties on pigs and pig products, the total cost of which, however, very much exceeds the yield from the duty.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, would I be right in saying that, though a Financial Resolution was passed by the House yesterday giving power to remove the duty on pig carcases, it will be within the power of another body to reimpose that duty for another purpose?

There was no reference to pig carcases in the Resolution before the House yesterday.

They are not being removed, and goodness knows when they will be.

They will be removed in accordance with the Budget statement.
