Vol. 57 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Chain Letter System.

asked the Minister for Justice whether his attention has been directed to the chain letter system which is developing here and, if so, whether he will take such steps as may be necessary to stop the practice.

My information is that up to the present the chain letter system has not reached any serious dimensions in this country. If the practice shows signs of growing, I shall take any steps which are open to me to discourage it. I take this opportunity to advise members of the public to ignore any communications of this sort which they may receive as the most effective means of bringing the practice to a speedy end.

I may inform the Minister that on closer inquiry he will find that, particularly in the City of Dublin, the thing has attained fairly considerable dimensions already, and my respectful submission is that the earlier he strikes at the evil, the easier it will be to make an end of it.

The information placed at my disposal was that there was only one case, and that the people concerned have since left the country.

I may say at least two enthusiasts have approached me to take part in two separate chains, and I thought, that being the case, that the thing must be pretty widespread.

They know a suitable subject when they see one.
