Vol. 59 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tobacco Manufacture Rebate.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the total amount of rebate (1) at the rate of 7d. per lb. under Section 20, sub-section (3) of the Finance Act (No. 20), 1932; and (2) at the rate of 3½d. per lb. under Section 18 of the Finance Act (No. 31), 1934, paid to licensed manufacturers of tobacco during the year ended 31st March, 1935.

The information requested by the Deputy is as follows:—

(1) £13,183 4s. 5d.

(2) £38,654 17s. 7d.

Is the Minister aware that that means that a total of £178,000 has been paid out of the Treasury to certain Irish manufacturers in this case, and that during the same period the total number of wage earners employed in the manufacture of tobacco fell by 108?

I am not aware of it. I have no doubt that I would be if the Deputy had put that question.
