Vol. 59 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clare and Limerick Holdings.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what is the total area of land held by Mr. Peter O'Loughlin of Liscannor, in the counties of Clare and Limerick (a) in his own name, (b) jointly with others, and whether a residential holding exceeding 100 acres in County Limerick was given to him six years ago by the Land Commission and why; if some of the land has since been let for grazing purposes only, and if the Minister will consider resuming this holding which is not being worked in accordance with proper methods of husbandry.

Peter O'Loughlin of Liscannor, County Clare, has been allotted on the Baring Estate, County Limerick, an area of 135a. 3r. 20p. in exchange for an area of 341a. 2r. 20p. surrendered by him in County Clare. An area of 271a. 2r. 1p. of the lands in County Clare has been allotted and the balance (70a. 0r. 21p.) still in the hands of Mr. O'Loughlin, is to be allotted shortly.

As far as the Land Commission are aware, this area of 70a. 0r. 21p. is the only land in County Clare at present held by Mr. O'Loughlin in his own name, but it appears he holds jointly with his aunt an area of 454a. 3r. 11p. of the lands of Lissylisheen, and 35a. 3r. 19p. of the lands of Cragnareban. The question of the acquisition of those lands is under consideration by the Land Commission.

It is understood that Mr. O'Loughlin has been letting some of the lands allotted to him on the Baring Estate in County Limerick pending the erection of a dwelling house thereon, when he is to take up residence on the lands and work them.

The Land Commission do not propose to reacquire these lands in County Limerick.
