Vol. 60 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Condition of County Cork Schools.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that the national school at Gortalassa, Durrus, County Cork, is now entirely unsuited for school purposes, owing to its sunken condition, extremely bad ventilation and light and inadaptability for heating purposes; that a sewerage drain from a farm yard runs close to the school and that same is in an insanitary condition, and if he proposes to take the necessary steps to provide a new school for the district.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that the national school at Gouladuv, Durrus, is little better than a hovel, and that the teacher and children are in constant danger while in the building; if he is further aware that a grant for the erection of a school in this district was sanctioned as far back as 1912, and if he proposes to take the necessary steps to remedy the conditions referred to immediately.

I propose to answer Questions 23 and 24 together.

I am aware that the existing Gortalassa and Galladoo national schools are so defective as to be unsuitable for school purposes.

Plans and specifications for two new schoolhouses have been prepared, and a communication has been addressed to the manager by my Department, asking him to say whether he is willing to provide a local contribution towards the cost of the proposed new schools. Should he agree to supply the local contribution deemed necessary, immediate steps will be taken to have tenders invited.
