Vol. 60 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Offaly Water Supply Schemes and Unemployment Relief Vote.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state the present position of his Department regarding proposals for the provision of water supply schemes for Clara and Banagher, Offaly; whether he has received any application from the Offaly Board of Health for grants from the Unemployment Relief Vote in order to enable such schemes to be carried out at the lowest cost to the local ratepayers and if he will state what action he has taken or proposes to take concerning the schemes mentioned.

As regards the proposed provision of a water supply for Clara the position is unchanged since my reply to the Deputy's Question of the 28th February, 1935. An Inquiry was held into the scheme in May, 1934, following which the Offaly Board of Health was informed that the scheme would require to be revised in order to provide a more ample supply. An alternative source was suggested and the board was to submit alternative plans, but these have not yet been received in my Department.

Arrangements are at present under consideration for the preparation of plans for the Banagher scheme.

The question of making a relief grant available towards the cost of these works cannot be considered until the usual plans and other documents, including detailed estimates of cost, are submitted to the Department.
