Vol. 61 No. 4

Written Answers. - Drainage in County Mayo.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (a) if a scheme for the drainage of the River Robe has been presented to him by the Commissioners of Public Works for confirmation; (b) if an order has been made by the Minister for Finance confirming the drainage scheme presented by the Commissioners, and (c) if he will now state when the Commissioners will proceed to carry out the scheme.

The drainage scheme for the River Robe was presented by the Commissioners of Public Works to the Minister for Finance for confirmation, and an order confirming the scheme has been made by the Minister. Steps have already been taken with a view to starting works in the district, and it is anticipated that drainage operations will be in full swing by the 1st May.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (a) the estimated amount of money necessary for the carrying out of the scheme for the drainage of the River Robe; (b) the amount to be provided by the Minister for Finance; (c) the amount guaranteed by the Mayo County Council and (d) the balance of such costs and expenses to be provided by the owners of the land to be drained or improved.

The River Robe drainage scheme is estimated to cost £45,400. If the scheme is carried out as proposed the Minister for Finance and the Mayo County Council have agreed to contribute 50 per cent. and 34.2 per cent. respectively of the total actual cost and expenses of carrying out the scheme; the balance (15.8 per cent.) will be repayable by the owners of the lands drained and improved.
