Vol. 61 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Bakers' Bread.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the price of bakers' bread varies in many districts; whether maximum and minimum prices for this commodity have been fixed, and if so, if he will state for the information of consumers what the prices are.

I am aware that the price of bakers' bread varies in many districts. Maximum and minimum prices for bread have not been fixed. It is my intention to introduce at an early date a Bill which, when enacted, will empower me to fix maximum prices for bread in Saorstát Eireann or in any particular area of Saorstát Eireann.

People generally seem to be under the impression that the Prices Commission fixed some price. Was that for Dublin alone?

The Prices Commission published notes of their conclusion as to what should be the price of bread. But the Prices Commission have no power to fix a maximum price. It would be necessary to get legislation passed before that power would be exercisable.
