Vol. 62 No. 3

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Service Temporary Clerks.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number of temporary clerks appointed in the Civil Service during the 12 months ended 31st March, 1936; the number of these who were engaged through the labour exchanges, and the number of these who were drawing (1) unemployment insurance, and (2) unemployment assistance immediately prior to the date of their employment in the Civil Service.

217 temporary clerks were appointed to the Civil Service during the 12 months ended 31st March, 1936. 156 of these clerks were selected from persons registered at employment exchanges. The most suitable clerks for the vacant posts are selected without reference to their position under the Unemployment Insurance Acts or Unemployment Assistance Acts. Information is not readily available as to how many of these clerks were drawing unemployment insurance or unemployment assistance immediately prior to the date of their employment in the Civil Service, and it could not be obtained without the expenditure of much time and labour which would not be justified by the results.
