Vol. 62 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - The Fergus Arterial Drainage Scheme.

Mr. P. Hogan

(Clare) asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is yet in a position to add anything to the statement he made on May 10th, 1933, respecting the investigation of his Department into the eligibility for unemployment insurance of workers employed on the Fergus Arterial Drainage Scheme, 1925-1926.

There has been no avoidable delay in dealing with the matter referred to in the Deputy's question. Some time was necessarily involved in devising a procedure which would enable the cases eventually to go before the High Court without cost to the workers or their representatives. This aspect of the matter was settled early in 1935 and arrangements were then made with the Office of Public Works for the submission of applications which were received in my Department on October 30th last. As the Deputy is aware from the copies of the schedules setting out the applications which were sent to various interested parties, including the Deputy, on November 30th, 1935, a very large number of different employments is involved. On that date also statutory notice was given of my intention to give my decision on the applications on or after January 6th, 1936. I expect to be in a position to give my decision at a very early date.

Mr. Hogan

Has the Minister devised any means by which motion could be detected in this investigation?
