Vol. 62 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Compensation for Omnibus Company's Employees.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that under the provisions of Section 63 of the Road Transport Act, 1933, certain employees of Messrs. Furey's Motor Omnibus Company, a licensed company under the Act of 1932, were not offered employment on the transfer of the licence to the authorised (passenger carrying) company, nor granted compensation in view of their employment not having been deemed whole-time, and if in view of the hardship resulting therefrom he will forthwith introduce proposals for legislation to amend the said Section 63 so as to bring within its terms persons whose employment was continuous throughout the year, and for not less than three days per week.

I am not aware that any employees of Messrs. Furey's to whom the provisions of Section 63 of the Road Transport Act, 1933, applied were not either offered employment or paid compensation by the authorised (passenger carrying) company to which Messrs. Furey's licences were transferred. Certain persons claiming to be employees of Messrs. Furey's were unable to substantiate their claims in this regard, and I am informed that there are no vacancies in the company's service to which they could be appointed. I am not prepared to introduce legislation of the nature suggested in the question.
