Vol. 62 No. 10

Written Answers. - Unemployed Benefit in Mayo.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state why Messrs. Michael Gibbons and Michael O'Malley, both of Gurthenacullan, Shrah, Tourmakeady, County Mayo, who signed the unemployment register on October 2nd, 1935, and since that date have only been provided with one fortnight's work, have not been allowed unemployment benefit.

Mr. Michael Gibbons, of Gurthenacullan, Shrah, Tourmakeady, County Mayo, made a renewed application for unemployment assistance at the Ballinrobe Branch Employment Office on the 2nd of October, 1935. As a consequence of certain inquiries which followed upon the lodgment of this application it was discovered that Mr. Gibbons had received payment of unemployment assistance for a period of 23 days during which he was in wage-earning employment. Payment of unemployment assistance was therefore withheld, and no payment can be made until certain further action which is contemplated has been taken. In regard to the application made by Mr. Michael O'Malley, payment of unemployment assistance was withheld pending the completion of inquiries into the validity of his application. These inquiries have been completed, and payment of unemployment assistance for the period up to and including the 26th May, 1936, was made to him on Friday last.
