Vol. 416 No. 6

Written Answers. - Removal of Container.

Tony Gregory

Question:

185 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the steps the Office of Public Works can take to have a large container removed from the Royal Canal bank at the rear of Arran Tyres, Binn's Bridge, Dublin 7 as it is a hazard and nuisance to local residents and is out of keeping with the development work being undertaken on the Royal Canal bank.

The container in question is most unsightly and severely detracts from what is a very attractive and popular stretch of the Royal Canal. However, the container is located on private property where it was placed by a local business and utilised by it as a store. The Commissioners of Public Works who have responsibility for the Royal Canal under the Canals Act 1986, have made representations to the owners to have the structure removed but these have been unsuccessful. They have also raised the matter with Dublin Corporation Planning Department in regard to possible breaches of the planning regulations. The Commissioners are currently awaiting the outcome to the investigations by the planning department.

Consideration is also being given to the termination of a licence held by the owners from the Office of Public Works for the use of a small piece of canal property as a vehicle turning area.
