Vol. 63 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Labour Exchanges—Temporary Clerks.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce (1) if it is his intention to compensate temporary clerks in the employment exchanges whose services have been or are about to be dispensed with; and (2) if he proposes to offer employment to these temporary clerks in other branches of the Civil Service as and when vacancies arise.

The answer to the first part of the Deputy's question is in the negative. It is made clear to temporary clerks on engagement that the appointment is purely temporary and terminable on the expiration of one week's notice and that it carries no right to gratuity or allowance on its termination. Every effort will be made by the employment exchanges, in the normal course of their duties, to place the discharged clerks in alternative employment, including any employment that may arise in Government Departments.
