Vol. 63 No. 5

Supplementary Estimate. - Vote 22—Stationery and Printing.

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim ná raghaidh thar £71,523 chun slánuithe na suime is gá chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfaidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1937, chun costais soláthair Pháipéarachais, Clódóireachta, Páipéir, Greamuíochta agus Leabhra Clóbhuailte i gcóir na Seirbhíse Puiblí; chun Tuarastail agus Costaisí Oifig an tSoláthair d'íoc; agus chun Ilsheirbhísí Ilghnéitheacha maraon le Tuairiscí Díospóireachtaí an Oireachtais.

That a sum not exceeding £71,523 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1937, for the expense of providing Stationery, Printing, Paper, Binding, and Printed Books for the Public Service; to pay the Salaries and Expenses of the Stationery Office; and for Sundry Miscellaneous Services, including Reports of Oireachtas Debates.

There is a reduction in this Vote of £26,246, largely due to the decreased cost of the register of electors. As the House is aware, in 1935-36 there was a heavy expenditure under this Vote due to the setting up of the type, etc., of this register. Of course, now it is merely a question of slightly altering the standing type for the purpose of dealing with minor alterations from year to year.

I should like to ask the Parliamentary Secretary when it is hoped to have the Irish translation of the New Testament published. The estimate for this has appeared on the Vote for quite a number of years. I know that during the last year we lost the services of the late Fr. Langford, whose death is a very great loss in connection with advanced work in Irish. I should like to ask what is the position of the work at present and when he hopes it will be concluded.

I am afraid I cannot give a date. As the Deputy has stated, we have, very unfortunately and regrettably, lost our editor. Another editor has been appointed. All I can say is that the work will be pressed on as much as possible.

Vote put and agreed to.
