Vol. 63 No. 12

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Restoration of Primary Teachers' “Cuts.”

asked the Minister for Education if and when it is intended to restore to primary teachers what they have been deprived of by "cuts" in recent years.

The revision of the salary scales of primary teachers effected in 1934 was an essential element in the settlement of the pensions problem which arose from the serious financial deficiency in the pension fund, as disclosed by actuarial investigation. As part of the settlement, the Government undertook full liability for the cost of teachers' pensions, and extended pension rights to two previously non-pensionable classes of teachers. There is no present intention to modify the arrangements which were made in 1934.
