Vol. 64 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Moate Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that the Russell estate at Mount Temple, Moate, has been sold to a person who is already in possession of 400 acres of land and holds an additional 200 acres on the 11 months system; whether the transfer of ownership to the person concerned will have the effect of disemploying a number of people hitherto employed on the Russell estate, of causing the eviction of one family at least, and of depriving a number of cottage tenants of grass and tillage accommodation; whether he is aware that adjacent to the estate there is a number of small holders who are in great need of additional land, and that great uneasiness exists because of the sale of the estate to the person concerned, and whether in the circumstances he is prepared to acquire the lands in question for the accommodation of neighbouring small holders and landless men.

The Deputy appears to refer to the lands of Ballysallagh (in the electoral division of Mount Temple), comprising 346 acres, on the estate of Frederick W. Russell, for the acquisition of which the Land Commission have already instituted proceedings. They have also decided to have an inspection made of the lands of Lissanode and Fairfield comprising 331 acres, the property of the same owner. In addition to these proceedings, they have had an inspection made of the lands of Ballynalone on the estate of the representatives of Henry Russell, deceased, and the question of their acquisition is under consideration.
