Vol. 65 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing in Dublin.

asked the Minister for local Government and Public Health if he will state (1) how many houses there are in the City of Dublin which have been condemned as unfit for human habitation, and have been left occupied owing to the inability of the authorities to find alternative accommodation, and (2) what is the average period between the condemning of a house and the evacuation of the tenants.

1. According to information obtained from the City Manager there are 1,798 unfit tenement houses in the city occupied by about 3,100 families, while 1,445 families occupy basements. 2. The period which elapses between the date of the official representation of the medical officer of health, which certifies premises in an unhealthy area to be unfit for human habitation, and the date upon which action can be taken to have the area evacuated to enable new dwellings to be erected thereon is at least 12 months.
