Vol. 65 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Control of Manufacturing Concerns.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will have a census taken of manufacturing concerns (other than brewing, distilling and tobacco concerns) with a view of determining as was done under the Census of Distribution, 1933 (Table 7) the extent of native and foreign control or ownership of such concerns as evidenced by the amount of money invested in such concerns in the beneficial ownership of citizens of Saorstát Eireann and of non-citizens respectively.

It is not proposed to have a census taken of the ownership of money invested in manufacturing concerns. The information which would be derived from the replies to a question in the same form as in the Census of Production would, in the case of manufacturing concerns, be of doubtful significance because of the more complicated conditions of ownership of such concerns, and statistical compilations analogous to those for distributing concerns, to which the Deputy refers, would be seriously misleading.
