Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grading of Pig Carcases.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state for the calendar year 1936 the classification or grading of the 1,056,853 pig carcases used for the manufacture of bacon in licensed premises according to the classification and grading of such carcases provided by Price Orders made pursuant to Section 140 of the Pigs and Bacon Act, 1935.

Of the total pigs used by bacon curers during the calendar year 1936, 79 per cent. were factory-purchased pigs, 17 per cent. were live pigs, and 4 per cent. were pork carcases. Factory-purchased pigs were classified and graded as follows:—

Class I

Grade A

44 per cent.

,, B

23 per cent.

,, C

10 per cent.

Class II

Grade A

3 per cent.

,, B

5 per cent.

,, C

5 per cent.

Class III

10 per cent.

Live pigs were classified as follows:—

Class I

90 per cent.

,, II

8 per cent.

,,III

2 per cent.

The classification of pork carcases was as follows:—

Class I

55 per cent.

,, II

35 per cent.

,,III

3 per cent.

,,IV

7 per cent.
