Vol. 66 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Estates.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission have acquired the Daly estate, Belville, County Galway, which was inspected some time since, and, if not, whether a price has been offered, and if same has been acceptable to the owner.

Mr. Boland

The Land Commission have had an inspection as to suitability and price made of the estate of John Daly, comprising the lands of Belleville demesne, Cossaun, Farravaun and Caraun, but the question of instituting proceedings for acquisition has not yet been decided.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what steps have been taken by the Land Commission to acquire for sub-division the Carter estate at Shraigh and the neighbouring townlands in the barony of Erris, County Mayo; whether these lands will be divided into economic holdings in the near future; and, if so, by what date and whether the tenants in these townlands can now obtain loans from the Land Commission for building purposes.

Mr. Boland

The untenanted lands on the Shaen Carter estate are at present being inspected in conjunction with the tenanted lands on this estate. As the Deputy has been already informed, all the holdings comprised in the tenanted portion have been retained by the Land Commission for rearrangement, where necessary. The work of examining this large estate with a view to rearrangement is being taken in hands in sections and the question of housing improvements will be considered at the same time.

The Land Commission will not be in a position to make advances to tenants for building purposes until such time as rearrangement schemes are approved.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he will state when it is proposed to take over Begley's untenanted lands at Facefield, Claremorris, County Mayo, and if he is in a position to state if these lands will be divided this year.

Mr. Boland

The Land Commission have instituted proceedings for the acquisition of the registered holding of Michael Begley in the townland of Facefield, but they are not at present in a position to state whether or when the lands will be acquired and divided. An appeal by the owner to the Appeal Tribunal is pending for hearing.
