Vol. 69 No. 1

Introduction of Bills. - Presidential Elections Bill, 1937—First Stage.

Leave granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to regulate, for the purpose of the Constitution of Ireland, latterly enacted by the people, elections for the office of President of Ireland, and to provide for matters incidental to or connected with such elections.—(The President).
Second Stage ordered for Wednesday, 29th September.

Has the President any idea who will be the candidates?

That question is not relevant.

When will this Bill be circulated?

All these Bills for the implementation of the Constitution will be circulated, it is hoped, a fortnight or three weeks before the reassembly of the Dáil.

Is there any reason why the House should sit on the 29th September? That is a very busy time in the country, and I understand there are a number of farmers on both sides of the House who will be engaged with the harvest at that particular time. If the President could see his way to give another week, it would enable harvesting operations to be finished and it would be a great asset to those interested in agriculture.

If I were assured that what the Deputy has stated about putting in the harvest is correct, I would have no objection to granting another week, but I thought that most of the work would have been completed by that time.

Threshing and the finishing up of the harvest generally have to be attended to.

Suppose, then, we extend the Recess for another week?

That would meet us.

Agreed.

It follows that the Second Readings of the measures already introduced will be taken on Wednesday, 6th October, instead of Wednesday, 29th September.
