Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building Workers Unemployed.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of building workers of each grade unemployed at December 1st, 1937, or at the nearest date for which the figures are available.

The numbers of building workers of each grade appearing on the live register during the first week of October, 1937 (the latest date for which figures are available) were as follows:— Carpenters, 1,176; bricklayers, 205; masons, 258; plasterers and tilers, 366; painters, 498; plumbers and glaziers, 189; builders' labourers, 3,780, making a total of 6,472.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of building workers of each grade unemployed in Dublin at December 1st, 1937, or at the nearest date for which the figures are available.

The numbers of building workers of each grade appearing on the live register at the Dublin Employment Exchange during the first week of October, 1937 (the latest date for which figures are available) were as follows:— Carpenters, 683; bricklayers, 147; masons, 45; plasterers and tilers, 263; painters, 287; plumbers and glaziers, 123; builders' labourers, 1,763, making a total of 3,311.

So there is really no shortage of skilled operatives in the building trade.
