Vol. 70 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Costs of 1937 General Election.

asked the Minister for Finance if he can state the total number of presiding officers and poll clerks employed at the 1937 General Election; the total all-in-cost of the election, including fees to returning officers, presiding officers, poll clerks and all others employed; and any other costs involved.

The total numbers of presiding officers and poll clerks employed in connection with the 1937 General Election, including the Plebiscite, were 4,768 and 7,251, respectively. Examination of the claims of a number of the returning officers has not yet been completed and certain charges on account of expenses incurred by the Office of Public Works and the Stationery Office have still to be met. It is not possible, therefore, to give a final figure as to the actual total cost. It is, however, estimated that this will amount approximately to £55,000 excluding the cost of certain new permanent equipment.

It would not be feasible with any degree of accuracy to segregate costs as between the General Election and the Plebiscite.

Can the Minister say when the travelling expenses will be paid to the presiding officers?

They will be paid at the earliest possible moment.

It is a very long time.

The Deputy will understand that there is a very considerable number to be checked and that the accounting officer will be personally responsible for any wrong payment.
