Vol. 70 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Labourers' Cottages.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state how soon plots will be provided in respect of the labourers' cottages at St. Coleman's Terrace, Gort, County Galway.

I cannot at present say when the plots will be provided. Inquiries are being made from the board of health and I will let the Deputy know the result.

Is the Minister aware that this has been going on for the past four or five years?

I know it has been going on for a long time.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state if the Galway Board of Health has yet made arrangements to fence adequately the cottage plots at Ballyhugh, Gort, County Galway.

The board of health have been advised by their solicitor that they are not responsible for the fencing of these plots.

Is it the case, then, in Gort, that in certain cases plots will not be provided and, when plots are provided, they will not be fenced, so that cattle travelling along the road may break in and destroy the vegetables sown in these plots?

When these plots were originally provided fences were also provided, but the fences were allowed to fall into disrepair.

I am informed that no fences were ever provided for these plots. If the Minister says they were, I should like to know has he confirmed that?

I have made inquiries and that is the information we have got—that when the plots were originally marked out fences were provided.

Will the Minister make inquiries from the board of health? The information that comes to me definitely from people living in the cottages, is that no fences were ever provided in respect of these plots and they had to erect temporary fences themselves to keep cattle from trespassing on the plots.

That is my information.

Will the Minister make further inquiries?

I have made inquiries and what I have told the Deputy is the information I have got.
