Written Answers. - Employment in Agriculture

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether in view of the fact that the official figures recently published disclose that between June, 1934, and June, 1937, the number of males employed in agriculture fell by 23,104, including a fall of members of family 18 years and over, 16,603; members of family 14-18 years, 2,857; permanent workers, 18 years and over, 2,157; temporary workers, 18 years and over, 1,749, and temporary workers, 14-18 years, 440, he will cause a return to be made for each county showing for the years 1931, 1934 and 1937 the total number of males in each enumerated class employed in agriculture on farms (a) not exceeding 5 acres; (b) above 5 and not exceeding 10 acres; (c) above 10 and not exceeding 15 acres; (d) above 15 and not exceeding 30 acres; (e) above 30 and not exceeding 50 acres; (f) above 50 and not exceeding 100 acres; (g) above 100 and not exceeding 200, and (h) above 200 acres.

The required figures for the year 1931 are published on pages 126 to 128 of the Report on Agricultural Statistics 1927-33 (P. No. 1577). The information cannot be compiled for the years 1934 or 1937 as the statistics for each of these years were not collected by size of farm.
