Vol. 70 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fencing and Planting of Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the fencing and planting of lands, situate in the townlands of Cullinagh and Hopkins Rea, on the slopes of the Galtee Mountains in County Tipperary, which have been carried out, has caused grave hardships to the landholders in those two townlands through the resultant loss of grazing rights for large numbers of sheep, which they held previous to the fencing and planting of these lands; also if he is aware that the further fencing and planting of lands in those two townlands which is contemplated will practically destroy the means of existence of 12 families, and whether in view of the hardships which are being thus inflicted he will arrange that no further fencing and planting is carried out on those lands, and that those who have already suffered losses will receive compensation.

Mr. Boland

Representations have been received in connection with the matter to which the Deputy refers and are at present under investigation. Planting on the lands has been suspended in the meanwhile.

There is here a large area of poor mountain land eminently suitable for afforestation, and it is to be hoped that some accommodation can be come to between the needs of the local sheep owners and the desire of the Department to develop this area as a considerable forestry centre giving good employment and adding to the wealth of the district.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, I would ask him to hurry up the investigation in this case. A good deal of trouble has arisen there. Wires have been cut, and cost put on the ratepayers.

Mr. Boland

I can assure the Deputy that there will be no undue delay.
