Vol. 70 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Forestry Workers' Wages.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the date when the rate of 24/- per week was fixed for forestry workers employed at Clonaslee, County Laoighis, and how the figure was arrived at; whether he is aware that the agricultural labourers of the same area are paid at the same rate, and that every other worker employed on every other forestry scheme in the same county is paid at the rate of 28/- per week, and whether he will sanction payment at the rate of 28/- per week to the men employed at Clonaslee, or state the reason why he refuses to do so.

Mr. Boland

The rate of 24/- per week for forestry workers at Clonaslee, County Laoighis, was fixed in relation to the existing rate for agricultural workers in the district in May, 1937, following the acquisition of the lands for afforestation. The rates of 28/- paid at other forestry centres in the same county were fixed at earlier dates. The question of revising the rate for Clonaslee is at present under consideration.

Would the Minister say how long more it is likely to be under consideration in view of the fact that the whole matter has been under consideration for three years?

Mr. Boland

I hope not very long. It is under consideration.

Might I suggest to the Minister that he should advise the commissioners not to take a hasty decision on the matter.

Mr. Boland

I do not think they want much advice from Deputy Davin. They can act without his advice.
