Vol. 70 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sub-Post Offices for County Dublin.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that the Dublin County Council has made representations to his Department to open a sub-post office at The Boot, Cloghran, to facilitate people in that area in the matter of payment of old-age pensions, widows' and orphans' pensions and unemployment assistance, and also for postal purposes, and if in view of these representations he is prepared to accede to this request.

I have received the representations referred to by the Deputy. The amount of business which it is estimated would be transacted at a post office at The Boot, Cloghran, would not justify the expense involved in its establishment and maintenance. The surrounding area is already provided with reasonable postal facilities and the revenue from the Boot district is very small. I regret, therefore, that it is not possible to grant the request.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if representations have been made to him by the Dublin County Council to open a sub-post office at the Summit, Howth, in view of the big number of visitors who stop there during the summer months; and if he is prepared to accede to this request, in view of the fact that the nearest post office is a mile and a half away and great hardship is inflicted on elderly persons returning from it to the Summit in Howth.

Arrangements are being made for the provision of a new sub-post office at the Summit, Howth.
