Vol. 70 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Coast Erosion in Kerry.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that recent storms in West Kerry have resulted in coast erosion at Ventry, where the main West Kerry road to Slea Head is within a few yards of the cliff, and that there is grave danger, in the event of further storms, of the road being washed away, thus cutting off Slea Head from Dingle, and to ask if, in the circumstances, he is prepared to allocate moneys out of the Employment Schemes Vote to build a sea wall to prevent further erosion.

An application for a grant to build a protection wall at Ventry has been received, and an inspection has been duly carried out. From the inspector's report it is clear that, apart from the question of the county road; the degree of public utility to be obtained from the work is incommensurate with the expenditure involved, and the application has accordingly been classified as unsuitable for execution as a minor employment scheme. The question of the protection of the county road appears to be one for the attention of the responsible local authority.
