Vol. 70 No. 9

Committee on Finance. - Vote 17—Rates on Government Property.

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim ná raghaidh thar £76,800 chun slánuithe na suime is gá chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfaidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1939, chun Rátaí agus Síntiúisí in ionad Rátaí, etc., i dtaobh Maoine Rialtais, agus chun Síntiúisí mar chabhair chun íochta Rátaí ar Aitreabhacha i seilbh Ionadaithe do Rialtaisí Coigríche.

That a sum not exceeding £76,800 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1939, for Rates and Contributions in lieu of Rates, etc., in respect of Government Property, and for Contributions towards Rates on Premises occupied by Representatives of External Governments.

This Vote more than any other marks a remarkable increase over the past seven years. The contribution then was a little over £80,000 a year, and it has now gone up to £117,000. That is a considerable increase. It is largely due, I expect, to an increase in the cost of living and to other matters of that sort. I expect the Minister is taking account of the fact, having regard to the complaints that are made by agriculturists generally as to the increase in the cost of rates throughout the country being now a rather serious matter for them.

Vote put and agreed.
