Vol. 71 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reformatories and Industrial Schools.

asked the Minister for Education whether he has now completed the examination of all the issuses arising out of reommentations of the Cussen Commission of Inquiry into the reformatory and industrial school systems; if he is in a position to state that the recommendations of the Commission relating to the appointment of teachers of literary subjects in those schools will he implemented; and, if so, if he will indicate approximately the date at which the recommendations will become operative.

The answer to the first and second parts of the question is "Yes." As regards that third part, I am not yet in a position to day when the recommendation in question will cone into operation.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, can the Minister give any approximate idea as to when he may be in a position to operate the terms of the recommendation?

Unfortunately I cannot mention a definite date. I can only say that we are doing everything possible to speed up the position, and that arrangements of the purpose of carrying the recommendation into effect will soon be complete.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, is he taking any steps ad interim to provide proper accommodation for juveniles on detention, and for the abolition of the disgusting premises in Summerhill which at present server that purpose? Dose the Minister propose to take any steps to provide alterative accommodation to that available in Summerhill? He is struck dumb by that inquiry?
