Vol. 72 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Laoighis Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands whether applications for portions of land on the Morgan estate, Mountmellick, Laoighis, were received from five cottage tenants living on or immediately adjoining the estate; whether the cottage tenant applicants included one married man with 12 dependents; and if he will state the reason why all these applicants were refused any portion of land when this estate was divided.

Mr. Boland

The applications which the Deputy mentions from cottage tenants for portions of land on the Morgan estate could not be granted by the Land Commission, as this estate comprised only some 62 acres. A holding had to be provided for a former herd on the estate, and the remaining area was utilised for the enlargement of three uneconomic holdings. The relief of congestion is the primary object in land division.
