Vol. 72 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin Cottage Schemes.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will take immediate action to enforce the Compulsory Purchase Order submitted by the County Dublin Board of Health and confirmed by his Department on the 5th October, 1935, for the erection of 40 cottages on 16 acres 19 perches which have been paid for at Tolka, Finglas; also, if he is aware that the purchase of additional land for cottages has been abandoned by the board of health, due to the action of the Dublin Corporation Town Planning Committee.

My information is that the board of health deferred proceeding with the erection of cottages on the lands compulsorily acquired pending final consideration of a proposal to acquire certain adjoining lands for the purpose of providing a greater number of cottages. So far as I am aware, the board have not decided to abandon the acquisition of the adjoining lands. The only action I could take to enforce the Compulsory Purchase Order would be to appoint a person to discharge the powers and duties of the board of health under the Labourers Acts. I do not think in present circumstances such a course would be warranted. The control of development in this area is important both from the point of view of the city and county, and I understand that this matter is being carefully considered at present by the two local bodies.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state when he proposes to hold the necessary public inquiry with a view to sanctioning the Cottage Agreement Scheme submitted to his Department over two months ago for the provision of 400 cottages for workers throughout County Dublin.

I presume that the Deputy refers to the inquiry which will be held into the application of the board for a loan to finance the scheme. In the case of an agreed scheme no inquiry is necessary into the proposal to acquire the lands. The various sites selected have been inspected. The Deputy may rest assured that the proposals of the board are being considered with the least possible delay.
