Vol. 73 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage Commission.

asked the Minister for Finance if he can state the number of meetings held by the Drainage Commission, and if the question of the Camlin, Rinn and Blackwater drainage has been referred to it for an early report; and also, if he is aware of the fact that owing to the severity of the season very extensive damage has been caused to the agricultural community in the counties of Longford and Leitrim by flooding.

One meeting of the Drainage Commission has been held, following which the various Government Departments interested, local bodies, drainage boards, etc., and professional institutes were invited to submit written statements of evidence. When the necessary statements have been received by the commission arrangements will be made without delay for the holding of further meetings.

The question of the Camlin, Rinn and Blackwater drainage has not been specifically referred to the commission. I am not aware that extensive damage has been caused this season to the agricultural community by flooding in the counties mentioned, nor have any complaints been received which would suggest that such a state of affairs exists.

If the Parliamentary Secretary consulted even a Fianna Fáil club down the country the members could inform him of the damage that has been done.
