asked the Minister for Education if he will state (a) the number of national school buildings at present listed as entirely unsuitable, and needing to be replaced; and in how many cases of these are new buildings in course of erection; and (b) the number of school buildings requiring substantial reconditioning, including the replacement or reconstruction of out-offices; and in how many cases of these is the necessary reconstruction work being carried out; and also if he is prepared to furnish a return showing, county by county, the number of schools coming under the heading of (a) and (b) respectively.

(a) There are 543 national schools which are listed as unsuitable and in need of replacement by new schools. In 51 of these cases the new buildings are in course of erection. (b) There are 412 national schools in need of reconstruction or substantial improvement, including the provision of new out-offices. The necessary works are being carried out in 73 of these cases.
