Vol. 73 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cured Mackerel.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that a considerable quantity of cured mackerel of the catch of 1937 and 1938 has been left on the hands of the fishbuyers of West Cork, owing to the failure of the U.S.A. market; and if he will take steps to find an outlet for this fish by securing a market for it in Éire, or by export, as otherwise this valuable food will deteriorate and have to be dumped to the great loss of the buyers and fishermen in that area.

I am aware that some pickled mackerel remains in the hands of certain curers, in the circumstances stated. The Sea Fisheries Association is, I understand, endeavouring to help in the matter; but I feel that neither the Association nor my Department can hope to do much better than the curers, who are themselves experts in the purchase and sale of mackerel.
