Vol. 73 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Portlaoighise Factory.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state to what extent his Department encouraged Messrs. Pepper, Lee and Company to start a woollen factory at Portlaoighise on the understanding that they were going to concentrate on these dress materials and light-weight cloths; if he will also state (a) the number of persons actually employed in that factory at present; (b) the number which it was proposed to employ when the promoters got the encouragement and facilities referred to to start the factory; and (c) the number which it is anticipated will be given employment in the factory eventually.

The Deputy is, no doubt, aware that it is my general policy not to approve the establishment of new industrial plants to make goods of the type made in sufficient quantities in existing Irish factories. No exception from this policy was made in favour of the Portlaoighise plant. It is contrary to my practice to give figures of employment relating to an individual firm, but I am prepared to supply the Deputy with certain figures for his confidential information.
